Weed control with Combcut gives more time to the farm animals

On the Swedish east coast just south of Kalmar in the community of Hagby you´ll find Voxtorpsgården, an organic farm with happy pigs and a well-visited farm shop. It is the Lundqvists you meet when you visit the farm.

Voxtorpsgården is a family farm where Jonas Lundqvist is the fourth generation of farming the 140 hectares on the farm together with his wife Karin. The transition from a conventional to an organic farm began in 2005, and since 2009, when they started running the farm together, it is a fully organic farm.

On the farm you will find pigs but also chickens that supply the farm shop with eggs, along with homemade sausages, other meat products, marmalade, honey, apple juice and vegetables depending on the season. In addition to that, they grow feedstuff for the pigs as well as wheat, mill wheat, rye, rapeseed, brown and black beans, grassland and sunflowers. They refine a lot of it themselves and the rest is sold to nearby farms.

The biggest weed problem at Voxtorpsgården is fat hen, thistle and docks. Before they had the mechanical weed cutter Combcut, only selective measures were made by hand but also by weed harrowing. “I still use the weed harrow occasionally, but since I don’t want to disturb the microorganisms in the soil too much, I prefer to only drive with Combcut”, continues Jonas. He also believes that Combcut saves him time and inrease yield. “Since I manage to keep the weed pressure down by cutting early down in the crop, the grain grows better,” Jonas points out.

“It was almost 10 years ago during a visit to Borgeby Fältdagar that I first saw and heard about Combcut”, Jonas said. “After that, I was thinking more and more about it and got in touch with a salesperson who gave me the information I needed for me to make a pretty quick decision that I have never regretted. I bought a machine and I now have my second, as the first one became a little warped in a minor accident.”

In the area around southern Kalmar, Jonas is quite alone in owning a Combcut, which means that Jonas is hired both in the immediate area but also further away.. “The most satisfied farmer I have helped had a wheat field with cornflower in it. If we wouldn´t have driven with Combcut. the field would in all likelihood have become a blue sea of cornflowers,” says Jonas with a smile.

“Right now we are preparing for our Christmas market in December. We have craftsmen on site and the customers pick up their pre-booked Christmas hams. And then we grill sausages, create a Christmas atmosphere and have a good time with the visitors,” concludes Jonas.
